Drinking plenty of water on a daily basis is vital to our health. Water carries nutrients to cells, helps with digestion, flushes out toxins, helps prevent headache and fatigue, and can even aid in weight loss or maintenance. Our bodies are up to 75% water, and staying well-hydrated is critical to our optimum health and survival.
There are different types of water and whoever thought that these types of water could be more or less beneficial than their counterparts? All these water types have different properties and benefits on our overall health, and all of these hydrate us when we drink enough throughout the day, and we need to consider their specific properties and perhaps attract to one type that will give you the best benefit to your health. However, NOT ALL WATER IS CREATED EQUAL.
Types of Drinking Water
Tap water is the water that you get directly from your faucet, it may or may not be suited for drinking purposes. It is widely used for household chores such as cleaning, cooking, gardening and washing clothes. It must meet the regulations set by the local Municipal bodies.
Despite tap water being considered drinkable, it can lead to numerous problems. For one, chlorine is not ideal for human consumption—while our bodies can technically handle it, chlorine can lead to a variety of health complications and is potentially carcinogenic (leads to cancer). There is also a risk of lead in tap water due to lead being present in the pipes that bring tap water to your home.
De-Ionized Water (Alkaline)
Alkaline water is engineered to have a higher pH than tap or bottled water, sitting anywhere between 7.5 and 10 (7 is neutral). It’s also a fertile source of potassium, calcium, magnesium, silica, and bicarbonate.
Drinking water with an alkaline pH has many benefits. It has been variously shown to relieve acid and pepsin-related conditions, improve mineral retention and optimize post-exercise hydration.
It also has powerful antioxidant properties which help counteract oxidation stress.
Some say alkaline water is beneficial because of its alkalinity (High pH-balance) and ORP (Oxidation Reduction Potential) that makes it an antioxidant. However, the antioxidant value only lasts 18-24 hours after it’s made. The higher pH will last approximately 1-2 weeks. The smaller molecule cluster size of its water will last about 1-3 months. Given these facts, bottling alkaline water makes no sense, because the health benefits are gone is such a short period. Don’t waste your money.
Alkaline water has been subject to plenty of research in the Far East (indeed, it has been drunk in Japan since the ’60s) and the results are frankly incredible.
Mineral water is the water that naturally contains minerals. It is obtained from underground sources, which makes it rich in minerals like calcium, magnesium, and manganese. No further minerals can be added to the water, except for limited ones such as carbonation, iron or manganese removal, before packaging. The component of mineral water can vary from brand to brand, some may have the number of minerals while others may have lesser.
In some places, rainwater accumulated underground tends to “leak” out at the surface as a spring, or puddle. Natural springs are not passed through a community water system and are yet considered suitable for drinking as it comes from under the ground. When it rains, water trickles down and travels through the inner crevices of the soil, beneath the ground to form underground lakes. This happens over a period of time. In rural areas, one of the primary sources of water is what is dug out from deep wells. Deep wells directly tap groundwater and bring it to the surface from which people can take their water.
Like distilled water, reverse osmosis water is usually referred to as ‘purified’: it is forced through membranes which remove particulates and pollutants. However, in our view, it is little more than pure dead water.
One problem with this type of water, aside from the fact that it’s demineralized (which leads to increased elimination of minerals from the body), is that it doesn’t hydrate as well as others.
Since we ostensibly drink water to hydrate our cells, it begs the question: why would you choose RO water over other kinds?
Another note to add to the ‘Cons’ column: the water’s usually acidic. Drinking acidic water will hamper our ability to maintain a healthy pH balance in the blood.

Dissolved solids” refer to any minerals, salts, metals, cations or anions dissolved in water. Total dissolved solids (TDS) comprise inorganic salts (principally calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, bicarbonates, chlorides, and sulfates) and some small amounts of organic matter that are dissolved in water.
Lastly, RO systems can be expensive to install. Again, you can get far better water than the kind that runs through a costly reverse osmosis machine. In my opinion, I don’t recommend installing a Reverse Osmosis Filter. But if you want to have installed in your residence or add in your kitchen you can buy in the trusted store like Amazon.
Purified water is the water which after deriving from its source has undergone purification treatment in a plant. The act of purifying entails removing all bacteria, contaminants and dissolved solids making it suitable to drinking and other purposes. You can either purchase it from the markets or install a water purifier at home and have pure water to consume.
Distilled water or demineralized water is one where the water has been subjected to a treatment that removes all its minerals and salt by the process of reverse osmosis and distillation. Distilled water is processed by boiling H2O out of its contaminants. So, the steam that results from the boiling is captured and cooled—and the water that results from the steam is what is classified as distilled water. It is an absolutely pure form of water but it is not typically recommended for drinking. It can cause mineral deficiencies because it is devoid of all salts and most of the natural minerals in the water are gone as a result of this process. Drinking this water may cause rapid sodium, potassium, chloride, and magnesium loss. As mentioned in my review, I don’t recommend this type of water for your hydration fluid.
